Music at our School

Curriculum Music

At Velmead, all children have a weekly music lesson, given by a specialist teacher. Music is linked with termly topics, with everything from rapping about the Ancient Greeks to creating music that sounds like a storm. Every lesson is practical and the children will have opportunities to use a range of percussion instruments, recorders, ukuleles and music technology. Children learn about a variety of musical genres such as Samba, Opera and Dance Music. They are introduced to, and encouraged to use, musical vocabulary. Each lesson focusses on one or more of the elements of music: Articulation,, Melody, Metre, Instrumentation, Dynamics, Pitch, Structure, Tempo, Tonality, Rhythm, Timbre and Texture. We work on developing the skills of Listening to Music, Writing Music, Reading Music, Singing, Playing instruments, Improvising and Composing.

Music Assembly

Music assemblies are once a fortnight. During these, Children learn about a ‘Musician of the Month,’ sing a warm-up song, often in parts, and learn a longer song to sing together. Once a term, Music Assembly is an opportunity for those children who learn an instrument to perform to their peers.

Instrumental Lessons

At Velmead, high quality one-to-one lessons are available on the following instruments: Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Clarinet, Saxophone, Flute, Recorder, Violin, Cello, Piano, Guitar, Electric Guitar, Ukulele and Drums.

Extra-curricular Music

Velmead is proud to have a choir of around 50 children and an orchestra of around 20 children. Both ensembles rehearse once a week and give two concerts per year to parents and friends of the school.
